Welcome to Lodestone Wine & Olive Private Estate

Lodestone Wine and Olive Estate was first established in 2012 on a beautiful, fynbos-covered property in the Redford area of the Crags just outside of Plettenberg Bay. The Estate comprises two adjoining farms nestling in the foothills of the Tsitsikama Mountains at an elevation of 250 metres. Ten years later, Lodestone Wine and Olive Estate was acquired by an International Investment Company who have a vision to create one of the most pristine private wine estates in the Crags Valley.

In January of 2022, the journey toward realising that vision has commenced and we look forward to sharing news updates with all of our loyal Lodestone customers and friends as each stage of this journey unfolds. Whilst our Restaurant and Tasting are currently closed, we are still available to fulfil all your wine and olive oil orders.

Terroir

Lodestone is located in an area which is naturally suited to the production of wines which favour a cool climate environment. It has similar geographic and climatic characteristics to the famed Marlborough area of New Zealand, known in particular for its sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and chardonnay.

Lodestone sits at an elevation of 250 metres. Its vineyards are in loamy soils over clay and are close enough to the Indian Ocean to feel the influence of its cooling breezes.

VINEYARD

Lodestone’s vineyard includes four grape varieties , all suited to a cool climate environment, namely sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir and semillon.

There are three clones of pinot noir, two of which are suited to the production of still wine and the third to sparkling wine. Vines are trellised and planted on a north-south orientation in rows which are 3 metres apart with the vines spaced 1,2 metres apart. This allows for approximately 2800 vines per hectare.

lodestone sustainability in wine making

Sustainability

More than half of Lodestone Farm is naturally covered by fynbos. All farming activities at Lodestone are conducted with due regard to the fynbos environment. Wherever possible, organic farming practices are followed.

Lodestone is home to a large number of birds and is particularly favoured by a wide variety of sunbirds. The farm backs onto the Whisky Creek Nature Reserve. The absence of any fencing along the common border ensures a constant flow of a number of small mammals onto the property.
